The key to identifying this individual is all the holes on the trunk of the tree. Even through you can’t see all the bird it has a black back and is fairly large. So a tree with holes, woodpecker, yes, large size, Pileated!

The Pileated Woodpecker is the largest woodpecker found in Canada. It is well known for chiselling out large holes in trees, telephone poles and even cedar siding! Sometimes the holes are large enough that the woodpecker will almost disappear inside the hole.

Any feeder watcher will recognize this bird despite not seeing it’s bill. Look at their shape, wing length. Tail, back colour, vent area color and white face. The up side down bird, as it is locally referred to is our White-breasted Nuthatch. This common feeder bird enjoys sunflower seeds and suet.
